Tyrosh

Tyrosh is one of the Nine Free Cities of Essos, a wealthy and militaristic island city-state whose influence radiates across the narrow sea through trade, sellswords, and the slave trade. In A Dance with Dragons, Tyrosh is never visited by a point-of-view character, but it functions as a persistent reference point—a place of origin, a market for slaves and goods, and a node in the web of alliances and enmities that shape the conflicts of the novel.

Geography and Character

Tyrosh is an island city-state, one of the three principal cities of the so-called Disputed Lands, alongside Myr and Lys. Its wealth derives from trade, slaving, and the hiring out of its formidable sellsword companies. The city is known for its distinctive cultural practices, most notably the dyeing of hair in bright colors—a custom that marks Tyroshi identity wherever they travel. Tyrion Lannister, when first encountering the blue-haired Young Griff, immediately associates the dye with Tyrosh, remarking that "Blue hair may serve you well in Tyrosh, but in Westeros children will throw stones at you and girls will laugh in your face" . Young Griff claims that his mother was a lady of Tyrosh and that he dyes his hair in memory of her, a story that Tyrion later recognizes as a cover for the prince's true identity .

Tyroshi in the Narrative

Several characters in the novel are identified as Tyroshi or are associated with the city. Daario Naharis, the flamboyant captain of the Stormcrows and Daenerys Targaryen's lover, is a Tyroshi sellsword. His appearance—a trident beard, gold tooth, and hair dyed in multiple colors—embodies the Tyroshi aesthetic. When Daenerys first meets him, he wears a purple beard and golden mustachios, and later dyes his hair back to blue to please her . His Tyroshi origin is part of his exotic, dangerous allure, but also marks him as an outsider in the rigid hierarchies of Meereen. Tyrion, upon hearing of a Tyroshi trader in Volantis, notes the man's "pointed beard dyed a splotchy purple" as a telltale sign .

Tyrosh in the Slave Trade and War

Tyrosh is deeply implicated in the slave trade that Daenerys Targaryen seeks to destroy. When Hizdahr zo Loraq explains the economic consequences of her abolition, he lists Tyrosh among the cities that "depend upon its slaves" . The city is also a source of sellswords; the Windblown, one of the free companies fighting for Yunkai against Meereen, recruits heavily in Tyrosh and other Free Cities. The Tattered Prince, commander of the Windblown, is a Pentoshi, but his company draws men from across the Free Cities, including Tyrosh (E00992–E00996).

Political and Commercial Networks

Tyrosh is part of the complex web of alliances and rivalries that define the politics of the Free Cities. During the War of the Five Kings, Tyrosh is one of the cities that sends envoys and sellswords to various factions. Illyrio Mopatis, the Pentoshi magister who orchestrates much of the plot to restore the Targaryens, has connections that reach into Tyrosh. When Tyrion asks about the Golden Company's contract, Illyrio mentions that they were under contract with Myr, another of the Disputed Lands cities, implying that Tyrosh is part of the same volatile system of shifting allegiances (E00850–E00851).

Significance

Tyrosh, though never directly depicted, serves as a synecdoche for the wider Essosi world that shapes the events of A Dance with Dragons. It is a source of the sellswords who fight for both sides in Slaver's Bay, a market for the slaves Daenerys frees, and a cultural touchstone that marks characters as exotic or dangerous. Its presence in the narrative underscores the interconnectedness of the Free Cities and the extent to which the wars of Westeros and Slaver's Bay are fueled by Essosi money, men, and trade.
